The Department provides treatment for corneal diseases.
The main directions are keratoplasty (corneal transplantation), when the damaged cornea is replaced with healthy donor corneal tissue, corneal collagen crosslinking, implantation of corneal segments and laser refractive surgery.
S. Fyodorov "Eye Microsurgery" has the largest keratoplasty experience in Russia. More than 16,500 donor corneal transplantations have been performed for 30 years of work, among them 1,400 operations were performed in St. Petersburg branch.
In our clinic various versions of keratoplasty are performed with a femtolaser. It provides the maximum conformity of the shape, size and quality of the matched surfaces of the transplanted tissue and the prepared recipient bed.
Specialists of the Refractive surgery and corneal pathology department are doing the following:
For correction of refractive errors, specialists of the department use the most world's best modern lasers:
Femtosecond laser creates an ultrathin corneal flap for FEMTO-LASIK and makes possible implantation of intrastromal rings and various types of keratoplasty.
In cases when laser correction is impossible due to contraindications (ultra-high degrees of ametropia, thin cornea, keratoconus, etc.), we perform implantation of modern personalized phakic intraocular contact lenses of a new generation (IPCL, ICL), which allow to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism of any degree. Unlike the replacement of the lens, phakic IOL implantation helps to keep the natural accommodation of the operated eye.
The department treats such corneal disorders as keratoconus, corneal pellucid degeneration, various dystrophies, corneal cicatricial changes, etc.
To treat keratoconus and strengthen the cornea in case of its degenerative diseases, the department performs corneal collagen crosslinking both classical protocol version and its various modifications, including the one with femtosecond laser support, which can significantly reduce discomfort in the postoperative period and accelerate patient’s rehabilitation. Due to the presence of the femtosecond laser VISUMAX ("Carl Zeiss Meditec") it is possible to perform implantation of intrastromal corneal segments if it is keratoconus of stages II-III.
For advanced stages of keratoconus (III-IV), dystrophies, corneal degenerative diseases, we perform corneal transplantation (keratoplasty)
Eye tissue bank (ETB) was opened in 2019 and is successfully functioning headed by A.V. Titov. ETB is equipped in accordance with all international standards. Materials prepared in the ETB allow to improve the results of engraftment and make keratoplasty not an emergency surgery, but a planned one, making the operation as comfortable as possible for our patients.

Titov Aleksei Valeryevich
Has performed more than 30,000 different ophthalmic surgeries for the entire period of his work, among them more than 25,000 excimer and femtosecond laser assisted refractive surgeries were performed in St. Petersburg branch of S. Fyodorov "Eye Microsurgery". More than 7,500 operations were performed on a femtosecond laser VISUMAX using SMILE technology. Dr. Titov introduced into practice of St. Petersburg branch implantation of modern personalized intraocular phakic contact lenses of a new generation (IPCL, ICL), which are used to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism of any degree when there are contraindications to the laser surgery. Deals with keratoconus problem, specialises in diagnostics and treatment of various keratectasias. Suggested the idea and introduced into practice at St. Petersburg branch implantation of corneal segments and selective types of keratoplasty with and without femto-laser support, also performs UV crosslinking.
