Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive dystrophic corneal disorder determined by genetic and acquired factors, it is characterized with progressive corneal thinning when its central parts are bulging out which forms a myopic refraction and irregular astigmatism.

Disease development leads to a significant visual acuity loss and makes ways of correction inefficient.

Keratoconus symptoms:

• Loss of visual acuity in one eye and then in another one.


• The distortion of letters when reading, merging symbols.


• Eyes quickly feel tired, sometimes may appear burning and sandy sensation, or feeling like there is a foreign object in the eye.


• The dispersion of light around its source, for example, a halo when looking at a lamp switched on, the patient sees an aura around it.


• Glasses and contact lenses correction do not give any result.

In our clinic for diagnostics we use:

• OCULUS «Pentacam» and SSCHWIND Sirius keratotopography

• Optical coherence tomography (ОСТ) «Avanti» OptoVue

Keratoconus treatment:

Depending on the stage of disease, as well as on some important anatomical and topographic characteristics, our doctor will offer You the best method of treatment. There are four main methods of treatment for keratoconus:

• Collagen-crosslinking


• Keratoplasty


• Implantation of intrastromal corneal segments


• Laser refractive surgeries (PRK)
